TAG Heuer Carrera – a legendary racing watch

Edouard Heuer founded TAG Heuer in 1860. With over 150 years of history and tradition, the introduction of the Carrera in 1963 was a milestone for the company. The motor racing inspired timepiece has become a classic piece among the watchmaking world and is now considered to be the flagship model of TAG Heuer.

The history of the Heuer Carrera

A passion for speed

Precise chronographs are the specialty of TAG Heuer. Their story begins with Edouard Heuer and his 1887-oscillating pinion, which was a crucial development in the creation of Heuer stopwatches and a mechanism that changed the operations of chronograph movements forever.

In 1889, Heuer – which was the name of the company during that time – introduced its first chronograph at the world exposition in Paris and thus began the success of the company. Heuer continued to develop movements and make technological advancements in watchmaking from that time forward. In 1911, Heuer announced its “Time of Trip” patent – the first dashboard chronograph designed for aeroplanes and automobiles that could measure the duration of a trip lasting several hours. In 1916, Heuer presented the “Mikrograph” – a chronograph with an accuracy of 1/100th of a second.

Heuer innovations and developments called out to the world of motorsports – in an atmosphere where every second is crucial, Heuer timepieces were very well received. A big breakthrough for the company took place in the 1960s – a time that was otherwise known as the golden age of motorsports. Jack Heuer, the great-grandson of the founder of the company, actively campaigned with famous drivers including Jo Siffert and Nicki Lauda and signed contracts with Ferrari and Formula 1. TAG Heuer took part in every major race, which is when Jack Heuer came to the realization that it was the perfect time to develop a timepiece specifically catered to motorsports.

TAG Heuer Carrera

The Carrera is one of the most famous chronographs among the TAG Heuer collection and furthermore, is simply a classic among mechanical sports watches. In 1963, the model was released and named after a road race of legend – the Mexican Carrera Panamericana. The celebrated design of the timepiece impresses with a large legible dial. The case of the watch is functional and robust since it is both shock-resistant and waterproof. The Carrera has been going strong for over half a century with no end in sight. It is a legendary timepiece that continues to partake in the world of motorsports. In honour of Carrera’s 50th anniversary, TAG Heuer launched exceptional new timepieces that pay tribute to five decades of incomparable designs and innovative technologies. The Carrera Calibre 1887 Chronograph Jack Heuer Edition exudes a pinch of vintage flair and honours the famous father of the timepiece. Furthermore, the in-house manufactured Calibre 1887 chronograph movement powers the watch.

The standard model of the collection is the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph 1887, but there are also several variations and special editions that constitute the line. The quest for precision and perfection runs through Carrera veins – a characteristic that can be witnessed throughout the development of the line over decades.

From 1963 to now

Legendary designs endure

The TAG Heuer Carrera has successfully persisted thanks to its excellent precision and its important responsibility at sporting events. The traditional company is characterised by pioneering developments and spectacular designs. Innovation and excellence are guiding principles for TAG Heuer, not only when it comes to the development of the Carrera line, but also when it comes to the enhancements of all its timepieces.

The dial of the first Carrera was presented with proper legibility and melded sporty elements with elegant design features. The V-shaped arrangement of the supporting dials highlighted the balanced design structure of the timepiece.

TAG Heuer has enhanced the original Carrera design with the addition of numerous successor models to the collection. Automatic movements and sapphire crystals are standard elements of Carrera watches. A fluted crown improves the grip of the timepiece while luminous indices improve the readability of the watch. Some of the models are waterproof up to 100 meters, further supplementing the sporty ambiance of the collection.

Special editions of the TAG Heuer Carrera

A race watch with many faces

TAG Heuer has launched a number of exquisite editions when it comes to the Carrera collection. Among the timepieces is the Carrera McLaren, a work of art that TAG Heuer developed in collaboration with the Formula 1 race team McLaren. To date, the collaboration with the famous racing team stands strong and McLaren racers can be witnessed utilising their TAG Heuer watches.

Likewise, models include the Carrera Calibre 5 with a case diameter that measures 39-millimeters and the larger Carrera Twin Time with a 41-millimeter case. The Carrera Twin Time convinces with simple elegance, and despite the considerable size of these timepieces, they never appear too bold or flashy on the wrist. One of the latest editions is the Carrera heritage, which impresses with the Calibre 6 automatic movement and a universally appealing case that measures 39-millimeters.

Carrera in the spotlight

Hollywood, Football, Formula 1

The list of TAG Heuer Carrera supporters is remarkably long. The Heuer Carrera models from the 1960s are highly sought out vintage watches while the current Carrera collection, with its innovative and robust aspects, is a highly popular model among watch enthusiasts and lovers of motorsports.

It comes as no surprise that Hollywood legends have fallen under the Carrera spell. Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Uma Thurman are TAG Heuer enthusiasts while Matthew McConaughey can be seen wearing a Carrera during one if his last productions.

Among athletes, the Carrera is a popular instrument that adorns the wrists of footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, golf ace Tiger Woods, and tennis star Maria Sharapova.

Naturally, the Carrera is highly regarded in the world of motorsports and is owned by the racers Kurt Busch, Kimi Raikkonen, Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton. The Swiss Formula 1 driver Jo Siffert can regularly be spotted with the Carrera around his wrist. Furthermore, the multiple world champion Ayrton Senna da Silva was a long time TAG Heuer ambassador.

A TAG Heuer Carrera timepiece simply enchants with its unique design, fascinating mechanisms, and rich history.
