Rolex Sky-Dweller – Patented masterpiece

One of the most innovative models of the Genevan manufacturer - the Rolex Sky-Dweller is a masterpiece of technology that is protected by 14 patents. The model from the Rolex Oyster collection is a watch for globetrotters that combines technical sophistication and easy usability.

The Sky-Dweller

Loading...

The Sky-Dweller is a newer model of the Oyster Perpetual collection and is an ideal companion for travellers of the world. It is designed for frequent flyers and is equipped with clever mechanic functions including a two time zone display, an automatic annual calendar, and a rotatable Ring Command bezel.

The shape of the watch is classic yet distinctive thanks to the striking 42-millimetre case. The integrated annual calendar automatically distinguishes between 30 and 31-day months. The reliable wristwatch is available in three different gold alloys with a stainless steel bracelet (Ref. 326939, Ref. 326938, Ref. 326935) or a leather strap (Ref. 326139, Ref. 326138, Ref. 326135). The Sky-Dweller offers high technological standards in combination with easy usability - for both of those who travel for business or pleasure.

Innovative and convenient – the Rolex Sky-Dweller

Beyond the GMT-function, the Sky-Dweller offers an integrated annual calendar, which automatically distinguishes between months that hold 30 or 31 days. Thus, the Sky-Dweller only requires one date adjustment per year - on the 1st of March.

The design mechanism for the annual calendar is exceptionally simple. Compared to traditional calendars with automatic time displays, only four additional gear wheels are needed for the Sky-Dweller. Rolex calls this valuable addition the Saros system, with reference to the ancient 18-year-cycle of the sun, moon, and earth. The months are displayed on the outer edge of the dial in 12 discreet apertures and the current month is highlighted in a contrasting colour.

Simple usage despite complicated functions

The true highlight of the Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller is the simple operability, which is guaranteed in spite of complex operations. The rotatable Ring Command bezel enables the wearer to easily select different functions. Depending on how far the bezel is rotated - one, two or three positions anti-clockwise - the date, the local time, or the reference time can be adjusted. Besides being functional, the fluted bezel, which was first presented in 1929, is an identifying feature of a Rolex watch and lives up to the high aesthetic standards of the brand. The Sky-Dweller is equipped with a newly designed automatic movement, calibre 9001. As with all the movements from the Rolex Oyster collection, the 9001 is a COSC-certified caliber. Therefore, it is a reliable chronometer which guarantees extraordinary precision. The calibre 9001 belongs to the most complex works by Rolex and ensures that the interaction between movement and case, run smoothly.

The Sky-Dweller

After primarily launching variations of existing models for a long time, the presentation of the Sky-Dweller as a completely new model was a surprising move taken by Rolex. The Rolex Sky-Dweller was presented in 2012 with a movement that is protected by 14 patents.

During the Baselworld Watch and Jewellery Show 2014, Rolex expanded the existing collection with further variations. Similar to the Day-Date, the Rolex Sky-Dweller is only available in precious metals: in 18-carat yellow gold (Ref. 326938), white gold (Ref. 326939), and Everose gold (Ref. 326135).

Due to the exquisite workmanship and innovative mechanics of the watch, the Sky-Dweller costs more than classic Rolex models, including the Submariner and the GMT-Master II. Irrespective of the case material, the price for a new Sky-Dweller is above the €20,000 mark.
