Omega Constellation

After launching a series of special editions in the 1970s, the year 1982 saw the presentation of the Constellation Manhattan (Ref. DD 398.0866), designed by Carol Didisheim. Bringing to light a new design standard, the bezel is equipped with striking claws or “griffes” at the 3 and 9 o’clock markers. The claws also serve as functional additions, as they firmly keep the sapphire crystal in place.

The first models with their simultaneously extravagant and elegant design were equipped with a quartz movement – back then, this represented an innovative break with tradition. In 1985, however, the Constellation Manhattan was outfitted with an automatic calibre and following tradition, was subsequently certified as a chronometer.

Today, this popular Omega watch family has been enriched by multiple modifications and special editions, yet the present models still preserve the basic characteristics of the very first Constellation Manhattan. The legendary prestige watch is now known first and foremost, as the watch of Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Mikhail Gorbachev.

The modern versions of the Constellation carry a strong appeal for female clientele. In 2009, Omega re-launched this popular collection with a completely new and revised design.

This model was able to win over a new generation of clientele within a very short period of time. Enthusiasts of the line will be delighted to find the familiar five-pointed star, the hallmark of the Omega Constellation, adorning the dial right above the numeral 6. The “griffes” or the claws embracing the Constellation bezel can still be admired in slightly modified form. The elegant dials exude an air of style and timelessness, especially in the case of distinguished colours including silver (Ref. 123.50.24.60.02.002), champagne (Ref. 123.50.27.60.08.001), black (Ref. 123.10.38.22.01.001), brown (Ref. 123.50.31.20.13.001), rose gold with diamonds (Ref. 123.55.27.60.99.004), and white mother-of-pearl (Ref. 123.20.27.20.55.005).

The ladies’ watches are available in a nearly unlimited selection. Prospective clients can choose from four different case sizes (24, 27, 31, and 35 mm), as well as between a mechanical model with an Omega Co-Axial movement or a model with a quartz movement. The Omega Co-Axial calibre 2500 was the first movement with Co-axial escapement, and can be found in the smaller 35 mm variant (Ref. 123.10.35.20.01.002) of the Constellation men’s watch. In addition, the Constellation collection also includes the 38 mm Day-Date models. Equipped with an Omega Co-Axial calibre 8602/8612, the weekday is displayed in place of the numeral 12 and a date window is displayed at the 6 o’clock marker. Omega offers its Day-Date men’s watches in 18K rose gold (Ref. 123.50.38.22.02.001) or classic gold (Ref. 123.55.38.22.02.002), as well as in a two-toned edition with a combination of stainless steel, and either 18-carat rose gold (Ref. 123.20.38.22.02.001), or a classic gold (Ref. 123.25.38.22.02.002). The Omega Globemaster represents the first watch that was certified by METAS as a standard practice. At the heart of the watch beats the advanced mechanical calibre 8900/8901 by Omega, with a magnetic field protection of up to 15.000 Gauss. The artful movement can be admired through the scratch-proof sapphire crystal bottom.

A decorative medallion feature that is comprised of the same case material is fastened to the case back of the watch with four screws. Engraved upon the medallion are eight symbolic stars above an observatory. These stars signify the eight steps of the rigorous METAS test, which control rate accuracy, water resistance, power reserve, as well as the magnetic resistance of the watches.

The design of the Globemaster is visibly inspired by the design of the first Constellation models. With a diameter of 39 mm and a pie pan dial, the Globemaster brings to mind the Pie Pan Constellation of 1952. One trademark characteristic of the Globemaster is the fluted bezel with rounded edges. It is comprised of extremely resistant carbide metal that proves even more scratch resistant than ceramics.

The Globemaster combines technical innovations with traditional design and is available in Sedna gold, stainless steel, or classic gold with a silver dial.
