Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox

A wake-up call on the wrist

The launch of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox in 1950 left individuals in a state of admiration. The watch featured an adjustable alarm function, which was a complete novelty technology at that time. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox was, in reality, one of the first wristwatches to incorporate an alarm feature. Thus, it became a mechanism that replaced alarm clocks on the bedside table and further offered support for everyday reminders.

The Memovox featured two separate crowns, allowing the alarm function and the timekeeping function of the watch to remain separate. This model was equipped with the manual Calibre 489. In 1956, the watch was fitted with the automatic Calibre 815. Thus, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox was the first automatically wound alarm wristwatch.

Variations of the Memovox

The voice of memory

The success of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox Automatic was ground-breaking. In fact, the original timepieces from the 1950s and 1960s are still highly sought after watches by watch enthusiasts and collectors. The original models can be discovered on the second-hand market and are priced in relation to the most recent resale price – a factor that illustrates the permanent value of the vintage timepieces.

The original Memovox has been supplemented over the years with numerous distinguishing models. The Memovox line has been equipped with date displays, world time dials, and even perpetual calendars. Jaeger-LeCoultre has also developed a stylish line of the Memovox that is catered to fashion-conscious supporters of the brand. These models included the Memovox speed Beat and the JLC Memovox Snowdrop. The most recent models, such as the Master Control Memovox Reveil, offer modern and functional advancement like alarm volume adjustment and vibration alerts.

Nevertheless, the elements of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox always remain faithful to the spirit of the original design. An interesting tidbit: the name Memovox is derived from two Latin words – “Memor” meaning remembering and “Vox” meaning voice. Together, the words create Memovox, or “the voice of memory”, which is a more than suitable name for the timepiece.

Memovox currently

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Memovox has been on the market since 2010. Stylish and elegant, the design of the timepiece has been inspired by the clear-cut lines of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Collection and has been fitted with the emblematic Memovox function. The Master Memovox resonates with a pleasant sound that arouses the senses when the alarm function is set off.

A sleek round silver case fitted with simple lugs distinguishes the Master Memovox from the crowd. Arabic numerals can be discovered at the 6, 9, and 12 o’clock markers, making for a highly legible dial. The cases itself measures 40-millimeters and is available in red, gold, or stainless steel. A date window is found at the 3 o’clock marker. A rotatable alarm screen with a sleek arrow indicator can be found in the centre of the dial, easily allowing for the desired alarm time to be set.

The Memovox International provides a simple answer to the orientation between time zones. The timepiece is a successor to the 1950s World Time model and displays the times of major cities around the globe. The Memovox International is equipped with 2 crowns at the 2 and 4 o’clock markers, making it easy to set the time, date, and alarm. The alarm function is not variable in volume but proclaims a clear and delightful sound, which can be used as a reminder for meetings or lunchtime appointments.

The Master Memovox and Master Memovox International have a power reserve of 45 hours. The Jaeger-LeCoultre timepiece always stands out on the wrist. It is optionally fitted with an elegant bracelet in pink gold and paired with a brown alligator leather strap or alternatively with a steel case and a black alligator leather strap. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox International is limited to 750 pieces in stainless steel and 250 pieces in rose gold. Both models are waterproof up to 5 bar or 50 meters.
